What This Means for You
With Custom Select, you have several advantages over over-the-counter box cabinets. The table above shows a side-by-side comparison of box cabinets, Custom Select, and our Custom Premier line. A few points could use further explanation.
Fit Tolerance 1/16” fit tolerance means cabinets are sized exactly to your space, requiring no filler strips and minimizing gaps.
Drawer Fronts: Slab vs Five-Piece Slab drawer fronts are made from one solid piece of wood with a flat front. Five-piece drawer fronts use a frame (two rails and two stiles) and a filler panel.
Drawer Boxes Box cabinets may use plywood or some mystery hardwood for their drawer construction. We use premium solid poplar for our Custom Select drawer boxes for higher uniformity and durability.
Finished Ends If your cabinets end before the wall does, it will leave an unsightly end that needs to be finished. To cover this, box cabinets use a pre-finished, 1/4” end panel with either a visible seam or end grain. For our Custom Select line, we use a 3/4” panel installed behind the drawers/doors.

FAQs
We designed Custom Select for customers who want custom cabinet quality but have a limited budget. If you’re budget-limited and have looked at box cabinets but were disappointed by the low quality, these cabinets are for you.
Who did we design Custom Select for?
1
We’ve cut options, not corners. Custom Select is our semi-custom line designed to give you the high-end look and quality of custom cabinetry but at a more affordable price point. While Custom Premier offers unlimited wood species, door styles, and cabinet heights, Custom Select streamlines the choices to our most popular, high-quality options, including four wood species, six door styles, and up to three custom paint finish colors per house.
What is the difference between Custom Select and Custom Premier?
2
No, you don’t. Unlike RTA (Ready-to-Assemble) or flat-packed box cabinets from big-box stores, Custom Select cabinets come fully assembled and ready for installation.
Do I have to assemble the Custom Select cabinets myself?
3
What does a "1/16-inch fit tolerance" mean for my kitchen?
4
Box cabinets are one-size-fits-most and typically have a fit tolerance of around three inches, which requires filler strips to hide any remaining gaps between the cabinets and your walls. Our Custom Select line is built with a 1/16" fit tolerance, meaning the cabinets are sized exactly to fit your specific space, eliminating the need for unsightly filler strips and minimizing gaps.
Can I choose any paint or stain color?
5
Yes, you can! We offer unlimited stain colors. For painted cabinets, we offer custom paint colors at absolutely no upcharge, allowing you to choose up to three different finish colors per house (perfect if you want a contrasting kitchen island or two-toned upper and lower cabinets).
What materials are used to build Custom Select cabinets?
6
We never use particleboard. Custom Select cabinets feature a frameless 3/4" birch plywood box construction with a 1/2" back. The drawer boxes are made using premium solid poplar wood with highly durable dovetail construction, ensuring they outlast standard mystery-wood or plywood drawers. All doors and drawers also come standard with soft-close hinges.
What wood species are available in the Custom Select line?
7
For this line, we’ve chosen four beautiful hardwood species: Cherry, Knotty Hickory, Maple, and Oak.
How are the visible ends of the cabinets finished?
8
When your cabinets end before a wall does, box cabinets usually cover the side with a thin, pre-finished 1/4" plywood panel that often doesn’t fit so well. Our Custom Select line uses a custom-fit 3/4" panel installed neatly behind the drawers and doors for a much cleaner, higher-end look.
Will I save money choosing Custom Select over big-box store cabinets?
9
While Custom Select costs more upfront than entry-level particleboard or flat-pack cabinets, it offers unmatched long-term value. You are getting 3/4" plywood construction, solid poplar dovetail drawers, zero-assembly convenience, custom sizing without filler strips, and custom paint finishes. You get true luxury craftsmanship without the premium custom price tag.
